#1 What is the Difference Between a Portable Dental Unit versus a Mobile Dental Cart?
The distinction between these two types of systems comes down to the primary purpose and how they are constructed. Portable dental units are primarily designed to be able to travel easily from one location to the next. Therefore, they are usually lighter weight, pack up easily and can be transported in a vehicle. The drawback is that they may have reduced performance, greater sound and less professional in appearance. Mobile dental units are generally larger cart style systems to be used primarily in a dental office or hospital type setting. They feature high end features, quieter sound, better handpiece performance and provide a professional appearance to patients and staff.
#2 What is Different Between a Dental Unit and a Dental Delivery System?
A Dental Unit is the core piece of equipment in the dental operatory that operates dental handpieces. The dental unit is comprised of a pneumatic system with control valves, handpiece holders, water bottles and a foot control that allows the dentist to pick a drill and begin using it by pressing the foot control. Dental units are the basic type of equipment and include air operated dental handpieces, air/water syringe and optionally can include dental suction instruments.
A Dental Delivery System is an advanced version of a dental unit that has all the same basic functions but integrated electric instruments including dental electric highspeed handpiece motors, implant motors, ultrasonic handpieces, curing lights and intra oral cameras. Advanced dental delivery systems operate all the handpieces from one foot control.
#3 How Do Self Contained Dental Units Work?
Mobile dental delivery carts work by combining the functions of a dental delivery unit along with a built-in air compressor system and suction system into one chassis. This way all that is required is a standard electrical outlet to plug it in and the unit is operable. No separate utility room or plumbing is required. For more information see “How it Works”
#4 How Do I Know Which Features for Portable Dental Equipment Are Important to Get?
Brands of self contained dental equipment can very significantly from very basic low-cost units that barely work to more high-end systems that are full featured and provide comprehensive capability and performance. There are numerous key features that are very important when selecting mobile equipment. For more information see article “Tips on Selecting the Best Portable Dental Unit”
