Common Questions Regarding Dental Stools

#1 What is the Difference Between a Dental Stool and a Dental Operator Chair?

A dental stool provides the essential seating platform for dentists and dental hygienists but is usually more compact with basic features of height adjustment and simpler backrests. A dental operator chair is a comprehensive seating solution featuring additional specifications of enhanced foam seating, seat tilt, front waterfall slope adjustment adjustable lumbar support and optional armrests for stability for magnification or specialty dental procedures.

#2 What is the Difference Between a Dental Operator Chair and a Dental Assistant Chair?

The dental operator chair allows the operator to sit comfortably with legs sloped slightly down and their feet comfortably on the floor. The dental assistant chair requires a greater height adjustment capability to allow the dental assistant to sit higher for better sight positioning in the oral cavity.  In addition, the dental assistant chair features a foot ring that allows the assistant to rest their feet and is usually equipped with either a front torso bar to offer support for leaning forward or optional armrests for upright posture support.

#3 What are Key Features Needed in an Ergonomic Dental Chair

Ergonomics requires that the chair readily adapts to the operator as everyone is physically different. This requires a seating method that can be custom fit to the operator and provide the correct stable support needed. Key features include the following:

  • A seat with engineered foam that properly supports and provides proper stability.
  • Readily adjustable height for the operator or assistant so that the seated position allows an open hip angle.
  • Adjustable waterfall slope on the front edge of the seat to help alleviate pressure on the thighs and improve circulation of the legs.
  • Adjustable forward motion of the backrest to allow the operator to fully sit in the chair and then apply gentle supportive pressure to the back. The backrest should include rubber mounts to flex with the operator yet provide needed support.
  • Properly designed and adjustable lumbar to match the curvature of the spine.
  • Optional armrests available for lengthy dental procedures that allow stability especially under magnification. Armrests need to adjust both width and height while swiveling forward to provide optimal support to the operator and relaxation of the shoulders.

#4 Should a Dental Assistant Chair Provide a Torso Bar or Armrests for Better Ergonomics?

Traditional dental assistant stools have always featured a curved torso bar that allowed the dental assistant to lean forward while viewing in the oral cavity. Although many assistants have learned to work this way it can be more unergonomic and causes strain. A more advanced method is to allow the dental assistant to use armrests and sit in an upright posture to remove strain from their lower back.
